This next post might seem a bit crazy, but if you’re feeling really adventurous, and are willing to take a bit of a risk, then I am going to explain a few reasons why you might want to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo.  This is definitely not a very safe country, due to the constant violence that has taken place over the past couple decades, but if you are willing to take the risk, I think you will like what you see.

My first recommendation would be to play it safe and stay in the capital ctiy of Kinshasa.  This is known as one of the safer cities in the DRC, and you will have the ability to find a modern hotel, and will find the few skyscrapers in the country.  Be sure to check out the Central Market of Matonge to really take in the culture, and possibly sample some of the local cuisine.  If you get the chance, also look out for the AAC Bonobo Nursery Sanctuary, and interact with an endangered chimpanzee.  Expect temperatures in the mid to high nineties whenever you travel, so make sure to track accordingly.

However, I would recommend getting out of the city and experiencing some of the DRC’s rare wildlife, and explore the lush rainforest, active volcanoes, beautiful waterfalls, and spectacular state parks.  If you are looking for an abundance of wildlife where guerrillas      roam free, make a day trip to the Symphonies Naturelles forest.  For breathtaking views, rent a four-wheel drive vehicle, and drive through the rainforest to find the Zongo Falls.  The waterfall is best to visit on a rainy day, so keep that in mind.  Another day trip to consider would be to the Nyiragongo Volcano.  Keep some change on you because there is a small fee to enter.  Don’t forget not to get too close because the volcano is still active!  Finally, for a relaxing day in the sun, I would highly recommend laying out next to one of the DRC’s gorgeous lakes.  Lake Tanganyika is a favorite of mine because it is yet to be discovered by many.  Plan a snorkeling trip, and you can be guaranteed to see one of the over three hundred species of fish that calls the lake home.

One warning is to make sure you plan your trips accordingly.  Going off track can lead you into some unsafe situations with all the violence taking place.  Plan your trips in a group, and you should have a great time.

So, if you’re feeling risky, check out the Democratic Republic of Congo, and enjoy your stay!
